Neal Atkins is a fine art photographer. Born in Wales and now residing in Berlin. The primary focus of his work is the Built Environment. Neal uses his lens to shine a light on the details we may overlook; the buildings and spaces we pass everyday, are given new meaning in Neal’s work. Through his unique approach to his subjects, we see the familiar in a new and striking light.

As a teenager Neal worked as a labourer on historic building sites and it was here that his love for architecture emerged. Learning to read buildings in the curve of an arch and the use of a particular material, gave Neal a strong appreciation for the stories that buildings tell and this informs his photography. His gaze ambles over endless tunnels, receding lines, sharp points and jagged shapes that jut into expansive skies. These unexpected, upturned views shed light on the spatial relationship between man and larger-than-life manmade structures. Neal’s architectural photography is in-your-face, masculine, post-industrial. His work illuminates a cacophony of lines, patterns, and overlapping angles that cast bold shadows. The flattened, unblemished compositions and silken, saturated colour palettes. Atkins’ exciting images compel the viewer to look again at buildings they think they know, finding extraordinary beauty in the ordinary.
